With the end of the semester coming to a close, I decided to interview a few people on the topic, “College Applications for Seniors.” As a senior myself, I know how hard this process can be. It can make you very stressed and nervous for what is yet to come. Fortunately, there is a place here in our school that helps us with these applications and any questions we have. This place is called the Go Center. There are many staff members there who can help you with any questions you have. I was honored to interview Ms. Montoya and seniors Cristina Avila, Isabella DeLuna, and Vanessa Lucio about these topics.
Ms. Montoya stated, “One of the most difficult parts of applications is getting the kids in, getting them to do their essays, knowing when a deadline is, and getting recommendation letters.” When I asked Cristina Avila the same question, she said, “The essays and deadlines were something I had difficulty with.” I then asked her how the Go Center helped her with that and she said, “They proofread my essays and comment on anything I can change, for deadlines they post reminders on their Instagram, or if I go into the Go Center, they remind me when I sit down.” I’ve heard many Seniors ask when they should start applying to colleges. So, I asked Ms. Montoya and she said as soon as possible.
Most college applications opened on August 1st. There are 3 main types of admission plans; early decision, early action, and regular decisions. A lot of kids have trouble finding the difference between early decision and action, when I asked Ms. Montoya, she shared that, “Early decision is binding, while early action allows you to hear back quicker with no binding to the college.” Another question a lot of seniors had was, “What resources does the Go Center offer?” I was informed that they offer a variety of things like fee waivers for applications, FAFSA help, scholarship resources, and other options on what to do after college. Ms. Montoya stated, “Everyone needs a plan after high school, whether it’s just working, or going to college.”Another question I asked these seniors was, “How did the Go Center help you during this whole process?” Vanessa Lucio expressed, “They have helped me make so much progress and have answered my questions every time. They have helped me find scholarships to apply to as well.” Isabella De Luna also stated, “They have helped with fee waivers and deadline dates.”
With all this said, it is safe to say that the Go Center is very helpful with college applications. From sending fee waivers to proofreading essays, they have helped seniors apply and get their acceptance. All 3 of the seniors I interviewed have said that their favorite part of all of this is getting to see their acceptance. So please stop by the Go Center and get those acceptances going.
