With school spirit being at an all time low at Carter Riverside High School, the administrative team along with the help of Mr. Martinez (History teacher) has created the “You’re Our Hero” campaign. This campaign is a reward system in which teachers can go to after school events and earn points for showing their support to their students.
In order to compete, all teachers have to do is show up at an after school event, take a selfie proving they were in attendance, and text or email it to Mr. Martinez. Seems simple enough, right? – Then why are only twelve teachers
As of October 2024 the following results were as follows:
Ms. Rios – 650
Jose Arcos – 300
Mrs. Ford – 600
Ms. Heimpel – 500
Mr. Martinez – 550
Mr. Forsythe – 450
Ms. Moore – 150
Ms. Owens – 250
Ms. Isern – 500
Mr. Cordray – 450
Ms. Ton Nu – 150
Mr. Vest – 600
Although it is true that it is impossible to attend all after school events, it appears that fewer teachers and staff members are participating than expected. If anything it sheds a light on perhaps why Carter’s morale has decreased after COVID 19.
However, hope still exists. Teachers such as US History teacher Ms. Moore admittedly can’t make every school event, but the new incentive has made a positive impact on some of the staff. Moore states, “If we, as adults, want kids to get involved then adults have to show up and be involved.” Staff members are becoming empowered to get off of the sidelines and show students that they want to invest in their interests, not just their education.
“I think it’s just sometimes taken for granted how powerful that relationship is between students and their adult supporters and mentors…” Says Mr. Martinez, the creator and sponsor of the “You’re Our Hero” campaign. “The kids very much appreciate that involvement.”
Students have responded positively to the increase of teacher and staff involvement at extracurricular events. Although participation in the campaign is slow going, it is possible that if this program continues over the years, it will inspire stronger relationships to be built between students and their adult supporters.
